Each letter starts with a description of Christ (drawn from chapter 1)\, followed by rebuke and encouragement\, exhortation to li sten\, and a promise that points us to our glorious future (described in R evelation 21-22). Jesus wants Christians to “overcome” or be “victor ious” (different translations of the same word) – but what does that m ean? The world defines “victory” in all sorts of ways\; for the Christ ian it means a life lived for Jesus\, right to the end. The victorious lif e means hard work and perseverance. It means our greatest love is for Chri st. It means being faithful during persecution and being opposed to false teaching. Use these first two letters to assess your life and your church. What message from the Spirit do we need to hear? \n\n“Your kingdom come \, your will be done\, on earth as in heaven.”\nPRAY: Ask God for streng th to carry out his will as revealed in these letters. In that context\, being a faithful witness to Jesus could bri ng persecution and death. The church also faces danger from within: false teachers/prophets were misleading believers into idol-worship and sexual i mmorality. This was a greater threat. Jesus has no tolerance for those who tolerate false teaching about sexual behaviour. Remaining faithful to Jes us means knowing the bigger picture. It means hearing the promises Christ speaks (Rev 2:17\, 26-27). It means knowing that Christ’s kingdom is ete rnal. Daniel’s interpretation of Nebuchadnezzar’s dream reveals four k ingdoms (Babylon\, Medes and Persians\, Greece\, and Rome) all of which wi ll be destroyed and replaced by the kingdom of Christ. If you feel the pre ssure to wander from Jesus\, whether to avoid hardship or to pursue sinful pleasures\, resist this temptation by keeping your eyes fixed on the eter nal kingdom of our Lord Jesus Christ.\n\n*“Give us this day our daily br ead.”*\n**PRAY**: How do you need a bigger vision of Christ’s kingdom to help you through this day or this week? Do you truly know the situation? Jesus knows his churches and he sees you clearly. He can see when a church might appear alive but in fact be dead (Rev. 3:1). He sees those who remain true to him (v4). He sees those who a re true to his word despite exhaustion (v.8). He sees those who claim to b e God’s people but are not (v9). He wants you to use these letters and\, wearing them like a new pair of glasses\, look at your church and see wha t Jesus sees. Do we need to hear a comfort or a challenge? Back in Babylon Shadrach\, Mesach and Abednego could see clearly. They saw the impressive gold image as a worthless image of worthless gods. They could see the lud icrous pomp and ceremony of an egotistical king. (Read Daniel 3 out loud\; you will see it as well.) They could see that the God they serve could sa ve them. They could also see that if he didn’t spare their lives\, it wa s still right to remain loyal to the living God.\n\n*“And forgive us our sins\, as we forgive those who sin against us.”*\n**PRAY**: Confess any sins highlighted by today’s or yesterday’s readings in Revelation. Or rather\, The Angel\, The Son of God. Jesus Christ walks among his churches (Rev. 2:13) and joins his people in their suffer ing. John sees his feet “like bronze glowing in a furnace” (2:15) beca use Jesus entered the fires of persecution and judgement with us and for u s. The presence of Jesus with his church is great comfort when everyone el se is worshipping other gods (religious\, material\, ideological or otherw ise)\; by his grace we also can become faithful and true witnesses (3:14). It is a truth we must take on faith (i.e. trusting that G od’s word is true) rather than by sight\, because when we watch the news and see the world it is far from obvious that the Most High is sovereign. What if a door into heaven could be opened so that we could see the highe st throne? This is what happens to John as he starts the second of four “in the Spirit” visions that make up the whole book (see 1:1\, 4:2\, 1 7:3\, 21:10). All of creation (4 living creatures) and all of the church ( 12 tribes\, 12 apostles) are represented in heaven giving praise to the ho ly and almighty Creator. The four horses/riders are s ent by God\; in fact the rider on the white horse may be Jesus himself (Re v 19:11-12). We hear echoes of Ezekiel (e.g. compare v6 with Ezekiel 14:21 ) and God’s destruction of Jerusalem for its idolatry. Jesus warned his generation that they would be judged for all the righteous blood that had been shed throughout Israel’s history (Matthew 23:33-39)\, and in the si ege of Jerusalem prior to its destruction in AD70 people killed each other \, there was famine and death\, and all the leadership was destroyed. That phrase comes from today’s reading in Daniel which is a warning a gainst all who arrogantly ignore the God of heaven. In Revelation 7 we fin d another example of John *hearing* and then *seeing*. He *hears* about th e 144\,000 and *sees* an uncountable multitude. They are the same people: the church\, the “servants of God”. The Lamb will save a perfect numbe r of people (symbolised by 144\,000) and this is an uncountable internatio nal community. God loves it when church is full of different nationalities and languages. There are strong echoes of God’s people being “sealed ” (with a cross!) in Ezekiel 9 prior to Jerusalem’s destruction\, remi nding us that many Christians faced great tribulation at the hands of thos e Jews who rejected their Messiah in the 40 years between Jesus’ ascensi on and AD70. Outcasts were welcomed in. The proud became angry and the rulers conspired to kill him. Jesus preache d severe ‘Woe’ against them\, even as he offered to gather them to him self (see again Matthew 23:29-39). Those who reject Jesus become an ‘Egy pt’ against which plagues will fall\; how many of the ten plagues do you spot here? Those who shut their gates against Jesus become a Jericho and can expect silence\, seven rounds of trumpets\, then destruction (Joshua 6 ). But these trumpets do not bring total devastation\; they are limited be cause at each step there is opportunity to hear the warning\, turn from si n and flee to Christ. Jesus taught that disasters (man-made or natural) sh ould lead us to repent (Luke 13:1-9). The Kingdom of God is always salvati on and judgement at the same time\, depending on whether people receive or reject the King. When we pray “Thy Kingdom Come” we are bringing salv ation and judgement to the world (Rev. 8:3-5).\n\n*“And forgive us our s ins\, as we forgive those who sin against us.”*\n**PRAY**: Perhaps you n eed to hear these warnings: what sin do you need to turn away from? We should read such passages as evocative imagery rather than diagrams a nd diaries. The locusts show demonic power as swift\, organised\, powerful \, sometimes seductive\, always deadly. These are not\, as some have asser ted\, descriptions of Apache attack helicopters! In Matthew 12:43-45 Jesus said that “this wicked generation” is like a house swept clean of evi l\, but then the evil returns and is worse than before. Jesus drove demons into the Abyss (Luke 8:31) but\, though many Jews turned to Christ\, the nation rejected him. Revelation 9 may describe what happened when evil ret urned\, worse than before\, in the final months before the destruction of Jerusalem in AD70. Certainly the history books describe an unimaginable fr enzy of horror as the defenders of the city turned on one another. Israel’s astonishing belief was that th eir god is The One True God. The LORD is the sovereign Creator. Daniel’s vision (explained in tomorrow’s reading) is there to show the small bel ieving remnant of Israel that the rise and fall of empires and superpowers is all within God’s control. The church’s Lord\, Jesus of Nazareth\, is supreme over *all* kingdoms and powers. Do you believe this? Revelation 10 shows a mighty angel (perhaps Jesus) who stands supreme over the sea ( Gentile nations) and the land (the Jewish people). The New Testament annou nces the revelation and accomplishment of God’s “mystery” (10:7): th e once hidden truth that\, in Christ\, God is uniting Jew and Gentile toge ther as one body (see e.g. Ephesians 3). Disasters and destructions (the first six tru mpets) are warnings from heaven but people do not listen (9:20-21). Instea d\, God’s plan is that the gospel goes out through the faithful witness of a church that frequently faces suffering and persecution. In highly sym bolic language that requires extensive knowledge of the Old Testament\, th e church is pictured as two witnesses like Moses and Elijah. At times God ’s people speak with power and authority. At other times nations seem to attack and kill the church. But just as Christ was crucified but then ros e again\, the church through the ages may seem to die but will always triu mph\, even through martyrdom (see e.g. Rev. 2:10-11). 42 months / 1260 day s / 3½ years is symbolic of great testing (Daniel 7:25) when the church i s sorely oppressed but ultimately vindicated. Christians were persecuted b y Jerusalem (11:8) and have faced threats many times since. It could be those Jewish peop le who used Roman might against Christians\, as we see in Acts\; it includ es the Roman Emperor cults which demanded that people sacrifice to Caesar in order to buy goods in the market. This ‘beastly’ religion tries to look like a lamb but it speaks like a dragon (13:11) and many Christians have suffered and died through resisting false or corrupt religion. All hu man-made religion is beastly\; this is represented by ‘666’. It is pro bably a reference to ‘Caesar Nero’ based on a common way of turning na mes into numbers. But ‘6’ is symbolic of humanity (Gen 1:26-31)\, so ‘666’ is a human trinity that falls short of ‘777’ symbolising the perfect Triune God. Watch out for false religion.\n\n*“For the Kingdom\ , the Power and the Glory are yours\, now and forever. Centuries of Christian dominance in the West has made us forget t hat\, for most believers\, remaining faithful to Jesus brings us into conf lict with our cultures and our world. Patient endurance means we keep goin g through the trials\, because we know the future. Isaiah 40 encouraged Ol d Testament believers to know there was a good future beyond the looming j udgement and exile\, which chapters 1-39 predicted. We need to believe: 1. the gospel announces judgement (14:7)\; 2. God’s enemies will fall (14: 8 is a prelude to chapters 17 and 18)\; 3. those who follow worldly ways r ather than Christ will be judged (14:9-11). Patient endurance means presen t loyalty to the Father and to the Lamb\, with the promise that one day we will sing their praises in glory.\n\n*“Our Father in heaven\, hallowed be your name.”*\n**PRAY**: What does ‘patient endurance’ mean for yo u today\, or this year? Ask for God’s help to live this way\, keeping hi s commands and remaining faithful to Jesus (Rev. 14:12). It also shows us\, repeatedly\, that he is “slow to ang er and of great goodness”. The seven seals and seven trumpets were warni ngs. Now the seven bowls speak of climactic judgement. The song of Moses ( Rev. 14:3) reminds us that\, after many warnings\, God decisively judged E gypt. Standing by the (Red) sea\, Israel rejoiced in the great and marvell ous deeds of God\, who had acted to destroy the oppressor and bring his pe ople into victorious salvation (Exodus 15). We tend to divide God’s salv ation and God’s justice\, enjoying one but being embarrassed by the othe r. Revelation\, following Jesus’ own teaching\, holds both together. Her e\, as in Matthew 13:13\, the harvest that gathers people from every natio n into his kingdom is also the harvest that brings the wicked into God’s wrath. The imagery of Isaiah 40 leads us to praise. The imagery of Revela tion 14-15 leads us to fear and humility. Combined\, we must respond with a desire to tell the nations about the King of the nations\, while there i s still time to repent.\n\n*“Your kingdom come\, your will be done\, on earth as in heaven.”*\n**PRAY**: Use Rev. 15:3-4 to pray for the growth of God’s kingdom across the nations. The vivid language is meant to be symbolic rather than literal: we should not read Rev. 16:2 and try to i dentify a particular illness. Rather we see that those who take the mark o f the beast end up ‘marked’ for judgement. We do not read verse 10 and imagine an eclipse\, but recognise that those who reject the light of Chr ist are dooming themselves to darkness. If the nations shed the blood of G od’s holy people\, they should expect God to be just in his judgement\, sending blood and death in return. No one in the Bible speaks more clearly about the reality of judgement than Jesus himself. God’s love for his c reation\, and the Lamb’s commitment to his church\, means that evil and wickedness must be overthrown. “Yes\, Lord God Almighty\, true and just are your judgements” (v7).\n\n*“Give us this day our daily bread.”* \n**PRAY**: Ask God to provide for the families of those who have been kil led for their faith. This is part of the complexity of Revelation: past\, present and future can be mixed together in one sce ne. Rev. 16:15 reminds us that we read Revelation *not* to work out some t imetable of events\, but to remain alert to spiritual realities. ‘Babylo n’ is every human institution that proudly ignores Jesus. For a while th ey seem secure\, but when God shakes the world they crumble and collapse. Sometimes the Lord judges by sending evil powers against evil powers (16:1 3-14)\, showing that he is God Almighty who is furiously opposed to all th at the dragon tries to do. Armageddon (the “Mount of Megiddo”\, which is mentioned several times in the Bible) stands for a decisive battles tha t causes kingdoms to be destroyed. The point of all of this? Jesus is the unshakeable Rock\, so build your life on him (Hebrews 12:25-29).\n\n*“An d forgive us our sins\, as we forgive those who sin against us.”*\n**PRA Y**: How has human pride corrupted our nation? In Revelation 1 7 we find a dangerous alternative. Power\, wealth\, comfort – all these have been offered by various societies across the ages. Look more closely and you find filth\, lies and brutality. Revelation wants to unmask all im perial powers and ideologies that do not have Christ at the centre. In the years after Jesus’ ascension\, Jerusalem (the ‘great city’ in which he died\, 17:18 and 11:8) tried to entice the majority-Jewish church away from him. Many who remained faithful to Christ were killed – and Jerusa lem often used Roman power to do so. (We see this in part in the book of A cts\, and remember that ‘Jerusalem’ stands for the Judean nation\, jus t as London might represent the UK.) Eventually\, though\, Rome turned on Jerusalem (17:16) and destroyed her. In the years since then different emp ires have seduced the hearts and minds of people\, even as they killed Chr istians (e.g. the USSR). In every age our heart\, our love\, our highest l oyalty must be given only to the Lamb.\n\n*“Lead us not into temptation\ , but deliver us from evil.”*\n**PRAY**: Ask God for help in the fight a gainst those temptations that seem most attractive. But he turned from God\, false worship became rampant\, God’s prophets were killed (Rev. 18:24) and the city was destroyed in 587BC. Eventually it wa s rebuilt but Jesus warned that a persistent rejection of the Messiah and his followers would lead to ruin\, which happened in AD70. But it was not the only rich city to face God’s judgement. Many Christians in John’s day had to resist the seductive riches and luxury offered by Rome\, that g reat city of global trade (18:9-19). It was almost impossible to believe t hat Rome might fall\, but it did. Christians in every generation need to l ive as people who know that every empire and nation will one day fall.
